Moisture damages in the church

Although the existing moisture damages poses a lower risk to the basic substance of the church, they are particularly conspicuous, since the moisture visibly attacks plaster and paint of the room shell for everyone.

The moisture measurements carried out so far have yielded surprising or ad highly inexplicable results and must be repeated at least under different weather conditions in order to be able to make approximately reliable statements.

The first causes have been identified: Defective connections in the drainage pipes lead to considerable water input in any heavy rainfall. For this reason, the ground lines must also be inspected with a camera survey.

On the other hand, some measures have been taken in recent decades to reduce in particular the rise of moisture from the soil. In the material-believing times of the 1950s to 1970s, a wide variety of techniques – including the use of chemicals – were applied, which today prove to be not resistant but also irreversible. Dealing with this will present a special challenge.
