THE CELLA MEMORIAE

The Cella Memoriae is the cradle of the cathedral and the city of Bonn. The medieval town centre developed from this late antique memorial site for the dead.

In 1928 two block-like bricked tables and a bench on three sides were found. It was the place for the memorial banquet, a heathen custom that was also practiced by Christians in the beginning. It is currently stored in the depot of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, but may soon find its place in the shadow of the cathedral. This retrieval of the Cella memoriae is an ambitious project of the Bonn Münster Foundation.
