On Pentecost Sunday in 1956, the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Aloysius Münch, celebrated with the people of Bonn the elevation of their central church to the “Papal Basilica minor”. Numerous papal coats of arms outside and inside (main portal, west portal, city patron saint shrine, crossing altar, windows in the north transept) bear witness to this.
